Health and Social Care

We provide a full range of services to the sector concentrating on dealing with regulators whether it be informal approaches to the content of Inspection Reports, pressing applications for registration, challenging CQC and CIW investigations and opposing Notice of Cancellation including Urgent Cancellation applications to the courts.

We deal with police and all other enforcement authorities in a range of matters including advising and defending in circumstances where manslaughter and corporate manslaughter are being investigated. We are used to responding to the Health and Safety Executive. We deal with Criminal Record Bureau matters, vulnerable adults and child realted matters..

Clients for whom we have acted are from the very largest UK operators of care homes to single owner-managed units, including charity and not for profit organisations.

Chambers and Partners UK Solicitors' directory states: 'Keith Lewin, at health and social care specialists Brunswicks, elicits a barrage of positive feedback. “He gives off an air of confidence that we feel is exceedingly important,” explain sources, who add: “He is able to grasp absolutely any point that you make and is happy to discuss all the issues with you and to keep you informed throughout the entire process.” His practice covers a full range of services and focuses on care home clients’ dealings with regulators, including challenging Commission of Social Care Inspection investigations.'

Our partners have, over many years, represented clients from different parts of the sector. This has included care homes of all kinds:

  • Adult Placement Schemes
  • Boarding schools
  • Care homes with Nursing
  • Care homes for the Older People
  • Care homes for Younger Adults
  • Childrens homes
  • Domicilary care, EMI and reminicence units
  • Learning Disabled provision
  • Private Hospitals
  • Psychiatric Hospitals, including secure and medium secure units

Both Keith M Lewin and Andrew W Dawson are co-authors of the leading text book on care homes, 'Care Homes A Practical Guide' published by Jordans.

In 2002 Keith acted as a special advisor to the Lithuanian Government under the EU Phare Project.

The team includes individuals with wide experience of training, lecturing and public speaking. Keith was the first person to provide guidance on the effects of the Protection of Vulnerable Adults (POVA) scheme - the day after it became operational he was running a training course on the subject. He is a trainer recommended by Centre for Policy on Ageing.

We have been frequently called upon to advise on the detailed working of the POVA scheme, we have advised employers and also those 'referred' to the POVA List Manager. We understand the CRB process and provide advice and representation in relation to a wide range of difficulties which arise when dealing with CRB and the consequences of the Disclosures.

Members of our team have been actively involved in lobbying government, CSCI and others to effect change for the benefit of providers. We are happy to work with industry associations for the benefit of members. One of our members regularly travels to Brussels.

The health and social care sector operates 24 hours a day, every day of the week. We know, from experience, that often major events occur outside normal working hours - our commitment to the sector includes the fact that we have lawyers available 24 hours a day, everyday of the year.

If a crisis occurs you can be confident that we will be on hand through the Crisis Intervention Line 07855 855 588.
